Grand theft in No. 203: the Texans steal Pegues and grade out a C.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Pegues at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

They are betting Fairchild proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.

It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a workhorse for the backfield at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick79 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston at slot 79 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick89 Rnd3 Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild at the 89th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick166 Rnd5 Chase Lundt
No drama and no debate, Chase Lundt went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick203 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in pick 203 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick241 Rnd7 Phil Mafah
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Phil Mafah at the 241st overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
