Draft Grade — Bears
Overall F
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureF
The board had answers; the Bears had Cupp. Grade: F.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Bears took Baylor Cupp at slot 255, roughly 121 spots before his name belonged. A F, plain and simple.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Holker pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback still on the board.

The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. That Legette pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In slot 13 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In the 27th overall pick they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid up for Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 34th pick when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick35 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at pick No. 35, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick36 Rnd2 Kamren Kinchens
No edge and no loss on Kamren Kinchens in Round 2, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick39 Rnd2 Brenden Rice
They reached into another round for Brenden Rice, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick40 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick43 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 43. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick47 Rnd2 Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at the 47th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick58 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Somehow Xavier Legette was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 26, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick75 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
Value said wait; Leonard Taylor III in No. 75 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick89 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
They jumped the gun on Dominick Puni, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick107 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in slot 107 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick109 Rnd4 Dallin Holker
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Dallin Holker at tight end with cornerback open.
Pick110 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in pick No. 110 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick111 Rnd4 Jalyx Hunt
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went S-EDGE with Jalyx Hunt while clear needs at cornerback sat open.
Pick122 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in the 122nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick126 Rnd4 Edefuan Ulofoshio
A wild overpay on Edefuan Ulofoshio in pick 126, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick140 Rnd5 Jaheim Bell
They took Jaheim Bell at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick145 Rnd5 Frank Gore Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Gore Jr. in Round 5, Pick 9, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick146 Rnd5 Sincere Haynesworth
Sincere Haynesworth at No. 146 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick147 Rnd5 Jordan Jefferson
Jordan Jefferson at the 147th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick187 Rnd6 Christian Jones
A reach for Christian Jones in pick No. 187; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick188 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at No. 188 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick189 Rnd6 De'Corian Clark
They paid a round early for De'Corian Clark in pick 189, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick192 Rnd6 Brevyn Spann-Ford
A big swing on Brevyn Spann-Ford at the 192nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick200 Rnd6 Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa in Round 6, Pick 25 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick201 Rnd6 Eric Gentry
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eric Gentry. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick225 Rnd7 Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan slipping to the 225th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227 Rnd7 Carson Steele
They talked themselves into Carson Steele at slot 227, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick229 Rnd7 Dylan McMahon
Dylan McMahon in pick No. 229 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick244 Rnd7 Mark Perry
No drama and no debate, Mark Perry went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 24. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick255 Rnd7 Baylor Cupp
Baylor Cupp at the 255th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick256 Rnd7 Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at No. 256 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
