The Steelers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Steelers took Cole Payton a full 25 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. However the rest shakes out, Taaffe at that price is a win they earned. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In No. 21 they get a ballhawk on the outside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53
Rnd2
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at Round 2, Pick 21 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick76
Rnd3
Dontay Corleone
A quiet steal in pick No. 76: Dontay Corleone for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
A tidy bit of business in the Round 3 slot, where Michael Taaffe graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick86
Rnd3
Skyler Bell
Skyler Bell in the 86th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121
Rnd4
Billy Schrauth
They jumped the gun on Billy Schrauth, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kaytron Allen
They took Kaytron Allen at par in slot 135, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick213
Rnd6
Cole Payton
A big swing on Cole Payton at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jimmy Rolder
Jimmy Rolder in Round 6, Pick 35 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jeff Caldwell
No edge and no loss on Jeff Caldwell in pick 224; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick237
Rnd7
Josh Cuevas
They paid sticker price for Josh Cuevas in pick No. 237, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
