Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureC-
The phones sank the Cardinals this weekend: D-. The Cardinals treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 7 slot on Ryan Flournoy a full 66 spots early. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They banked enough surplus on Hopper to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. The Cardinals paired the rookies with proven help, Patrick Queen leading the way.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In slot 27 they get a sticky cover corner. More want than need.
Pick35
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at the 35th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick40
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Nice patience on Troy Fautanu, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49
Rnd2
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at No. 49 is the proof. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick57
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes at Round 2, Pick 25 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick62
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braden Fiske well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in Round 3, Pick 7 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick88
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley slipping to slot 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick91
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They took Sedrick Van Pran at par in No. 91, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil in the 100th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick105
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at the 137th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick148
Rnd5
Austin Booker
A reach on Austin Booker in pick 148; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick153
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
The board had Ben Sinnott higher than pick No. 153, and the tight end fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick154
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
They paid up for Chau Smith-Wade at pick No. 154 when waiting would have done the job. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick164
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid sticker price for Frank Gore Jr. in the 164th pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick181
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall in pick 181 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick188
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
You do not let a linebacker like Ty'Ron Hopper reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195
Rnd6
Roger Rosengarten
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Roger Rosengarten in slot 195, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick196
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanor Bortolini in No. 196, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick198
Rnd6
Aki Ogunbiyi
Fair-plus on Aki Ogunbiyi, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jha'Quan Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Jha'Quan Jackson a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217
Rnd6
Erick All
Erick All in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick218
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
They reached a country mile for Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 218, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick224
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
No edge and no loss on Taulia Tagovailoa in slot 224; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick234
Rnd7
Kenny Logan Jr.
They will replay Kenny Logan Jr. at No. 234 for years; that is how good the value is. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick235
Rnd7
Jeremy Flax
Jeremy Flax at Round 7, Pick 15 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick238
Rnd7
Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy at the 238th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick243
Rnd7
Walter Rouse
A conviction pick on Walter Rouse at the 243rd pick that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Myles Cole
They went early on Myles Cole in pick 248, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
