Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedA- TradesC FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with JJ Pegues in No. 144.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.

Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Abdul Carter. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick38 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
A conviction pick on Aireontae Ersery at pick No. 38 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick69 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at the 69th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick77 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger at No. 77 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick129 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
Somehow Cam Skattebo was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick136 Rnd4 Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant in Round 4, Pick 34 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick144 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for JJ Pegues. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171 Rnd5 Seth McLaughlin
Fair-plus on Seth McLaughlin, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick212 Rnd6 Cam Horsley
A real head-scratcher, Cam Horsley in the 212th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220 Rnd7 Ricky White III
They took Ricky White III at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick238 Rnd7 Donovan Smith
They reached a country mile for Donovan Smith at pick 238, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
