FutureB
The Saints checked most of the boxes and earned a B. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Saints took Donell Harris Jr. a full 51 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Getting Shipley where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In slot 14 they get a disruptor off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick61
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy slipping to pick No. 61 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Pick99
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in No. 99 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Jarrian Jones graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Will Shipley
Taking Will Shipley in Round 5, Pick 26 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick170
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
A slide stopped in pick 170, with LaDarius Henderson worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick176
Rnd6
Roger Rosengarten
Good price on Roger Rosengarten in the 176th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick192
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
A quiet steal in Round 6, Pick 17: Josh Proctor for less than the market said. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick198
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in No. 198 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick205
Rnd6
Donell Harris Jr.
A big swing on Donell Harris Jr. at pick No. 205, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick250
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
A reach on Tanner McLachlan in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
