Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Larceny in pick 133 lands the Chiefs a B-, Horton and all. Call it larceny. Tory Horton sat on the board until slot 133, and the Chiefs did not need to be asked twice. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Mbow reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Marcus Mbow
In the 31st pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Harold Fannin Jr.
Nice patience on Harold Fannin Jr., who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 31. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick66
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick95
Rnd3
Sebastian Castro
The board had Sebastian Castro higher than pick 95, and the safety fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick133
Rnd4
Tory Horton
They barely believed it either: Tory Horton still on the board at the 133rd overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick226
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Nothing to complain about; Phil Mafah went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick251
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III at pick No. 251 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick257
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
By-the-book stuff, Jaylin Smith at slot 257 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
