Draft Grade — Lions
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Lions, and a B- to prove it. Every other box got a look, but linebacker did not. The Lions will head to camp with the same hole they walked in with.
The cost of the Slater reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Mike Green
By-the-book stuff, Mike Green at pick No. 28 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick60
Rnd2
Jaylin Noel
Jaylin Noel in Round 2, Pick 28 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick102
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
They paid sticker price for Jared Wilson in pick 102, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jackson Slater
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jackson Slater this early at the 130th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick196
Rnd6
Upton Stout
A tidy little value on Upton Stout in the 196th pick, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
They jumped the gun on Jabbar Muhammad, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick244
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
A reach for Ty Hamilton in No. 244; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
