FutureA
The Bills did enough to get by: C+. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 62, a good 123 spots before the room expected him. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Jaylon Carlies pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick Analysis
Pick56
Rnd2
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at No. 56 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick62
Rnd2
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dont'e Thornton Jr. this early at pick No. 62. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
They paid a round early for Dorian Strong in the 109th pick, more than the board wanted. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick132
Rnd4
Jaylen Reed
A big swing on Jaylen Reed at Round 4, Pick 30, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
This one needs a full-page explanation: JJ Pegues in slot 169, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick170
Rnd5
Que Robinson
They reached a country mile for Que Robinson at pick 170, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick173
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at the 173rd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177
Rnd6
Caleb Ransaw
Caleb Ransaw in pick No. 177 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick206
Rnd6
Tyler Cooper
Nothing to complain about; Tyler Cooper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
