Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall
C-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureA-
The Dolphins bled value on every deal, hence the C-. Nobody else had Vernon Broughton anywhere near slot 135. The Dolphins did, by 51 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Call it a C- and check back in two years.
Landing Alexander that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.
If Jahdae Barron and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In No. 24 they get a sticky cover corner, outstanding value to boot.
Pick48
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at pick 48. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick68
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Donovan Jackson in slot 68. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick98
Rnd3
Savion Williams
A clean, defensible pick in the 98th pick with a little surplus value in Savion Williams. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick116
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Farmer. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at the 135th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139
Rnd5
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander in slot 139 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick143
Rnd5
Kurtis Rourke
Good price on Kurtis Rourke in Round 5, Pick 5, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick150
Rnd5
Barryn Sorrell
A premium they did not need to pay, Barryn Sorrell a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick155
Rnd5
Chase Lundt
A conviction pick on Chase Lundt at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick224
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in the 224th pick says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick231
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
Kyle Monangai at pick No. 231 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Pick253
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
No edge and no loss on Jackson Hawes in pick 253; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
