FutureB+
Good, not great, for the Bears: B. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bears would have aced it. Jacory Croskey-Merritt at Round 7, Pick 17 is 49 spots clear of where he belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Nolen.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster. Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In pick 12 they get a seam-stretching tight end. Need was not the driver here.
Pick39
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
They will replay Walter Nolen at the 39th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick41
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks is a better player than slot 41 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick72
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
Steal is underselling it; TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 3 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick148
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
Circle this one: Kyle Williams at Round 5, Pick 10 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick149
Rnd5
Logan Brown
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Logan Brown. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
A premium they did not need to pay, Jack Kiser a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick233
Rnd7
Jacory Croskey-Merritt
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jacory Croskey-Merritt this early at the 233rd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick240
Rnd7
Nick Martin
A real head-scratcher, Nick Martin in pick No. 240 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
