FutureA
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a A-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Braelon Allen; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 53 spots ahead at the 104th overall pick. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The veteran additions, Justin Fields chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 8 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at the 34th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick78
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dominick Puni. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick81
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roman Wilson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick104
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
They reached a country mile for Braelon Allen at No. 104, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick136
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
They jumped the gun on Theo Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick182
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at the 182nd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick194
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They went early on Christian Jones in slot 194, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick229
Rnd7
Carson Steele
They talked themselves into Carson Steele at pick No. 229, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
