Draft Grade — Browns

FutureD+
The Browns worked the phones like thieves and earned a B. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Browns did exactly that with Shilo Sanders in pick 230. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Howard. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The Browns indulged a want in Carter while a need in edge rusher and offensive lineman stayed open. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Fair-plus on Emeka Egbuka, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jaxson Dart
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaxson Dart in slot 44. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick54
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick59
Rnd2
Elic Ayomanor
A premium they did not need to pay, Elic Ayomanor a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at Round 2, Pick 30 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick67
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
The board had cheaper options than Mason Taylor at the 67th pick, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick72
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at pick No. 72 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick87
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at the 87th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick94
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
They left a pile of value on the table to take Denzel Burke this early at the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
They liked Zy Alexander enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 99. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick104
Rnd4
Barrett Carter
A surprising call. With edge rusher and offensive lineman still to address, they spent slot 104 on Barrett Carter, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick118
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 16 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick124
Rnd4
Mitchell Evans
A real head-scratcher, Mitchell Evans in No. 124 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick154
Rnd5
Will Howard
The board fumbled Will Howard all the way to the 154th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick169
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
A wild overpay on Oronde Gadsden II in pick 169, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick177
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at No. 177 is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick221
Rnd7
Ja'Corey Brooks
They went early on Ja'Corey Brooks in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick230
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Shilo Sanders at pick No. 230 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
A clean, defensible pick in slot 255 with a little surplus value in Jabbar Muhammad. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
