The board owed the Bears one, and it paid up: Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 119 name on the board, sitting there at the 235th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

They will need Thornton Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
