FutureA
The Bears let Sampson fall and pounced. Final grade: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dylan Sampson got past him. The Bears do not have to explain a thing at the 126th overall pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In the Round 1 slot they get a load in the middle. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
They took Tyler Booker at par in Round 2, Pick 7, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick49
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
They paid sticker price for JT Tuimoloau in the 49th overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at pick 72 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 89th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick117
Rnd4
Elic Ayomanor
They will replay Elic Ayomanor at No. 117 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick126
Rnd4
Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson in pick No. 126 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick147
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
You do not let a linebacker like Smael Mondon Jr. reach slot 147 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick193
Rnd6
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo slipping to pick No. 193 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick233
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
Taking Jack Kiser in slot 233 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
