Mick DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Steelers won the night they stopped Brooks from sliding. Grade: B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Steelers watched Tahj Brooks slide 27 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The cost of the Shough reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick83
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Darien Porter at No. 83 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick123
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tyler Shough in the 123rd pick, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick156
Rnd5
Nick Nash
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nick Nash. The roster fit checks out.
Pick185
Rnd6
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at pick 185 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick229
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
They will replay Tahj Brooks at slot 229 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
