Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureC-
Nobody dealt better than the Cowboys this weekend: B.

The real work happened on the phones. The Cowboys fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

The cost of the Oben reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Mbow value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The veteran additions, Ben Powers chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Will Johnson
In the 20th pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick44 Rnd2 Kenneth Grant
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 44 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick47 Rnd2 TreVeyon Henderson
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on TreVeyon Henderson. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick49 Rnd2 Tre Harris
Tre Harris at No. 49 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76 Rnd3 Marcus Mbow
Somehow Marcus Mbow was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 12, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115 Rnd4 Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in the Round 4 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130 Rnd4 Jordan Phillips
They will replay Jordan Phillips at pick 130 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick149 Rnd5 Jalen Rivers
Jalen Rivers at the 149th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick196 Rnd6 Kyle Monangai
They talked themselves into Kyle Monangai at slot 196, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick204 Rnd6 RJ Oben
RJ Oben at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick211 Rnd6 Caleb Ransaw
By-the-book stuff, Caleb Ransaw at pick 211 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They reached into another round for Jamon Dumas-Johnson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick239 Rnd7 Ricky White III
Ricky White III at No. 239 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick247 Rnd7 Mac McWilliams
They took Mac McWilliams at par in the 247th pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
