When the story of this class is written, it opens with DeWayne Carter at the 65th overall pick, a reach of 37 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in No. 55; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for DeWayne Carter at pick No. 65, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Chau Smith-Wade in the 104th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tanor Bortolini at slot 158 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Kendall Milton at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tahj Washington at pick 198 is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sam Hartman at pick No. 233 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
