Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Cowboys a B-. It is a puzzling start. The Cowboys had offensive lineman, tight end and other spots to solve and reached instead for Quincy Rhodes Jr., an edge rusher, at pick 47. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Stewart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Landing Hartford that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
LT Overton
LT Overton at No. 15 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick31
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In the 31st pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick47
Rnd2
Quincy Rhodes Jr.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 47 on Quincy Rhodes Jr. with offensive lineman, tight end and other spots unsolved.
Pick115
Rnd4
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at Round 4, Pick 15 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick155
Rnd5
Terion Stewart
Terion Stewart in No. 155 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick176
Rnd5
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at the 176th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick179
Rnd5
Josh Moten
Josh Moten at the Round 5 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jalon Daniels
Jalon Daniels in slot 221 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick233
Rnd7
Malik Hartford
Malik Hartford at pick 233 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
