It is the swing that defines the weekend: Julius Welschof in the 239th overall pick, a good 90 spots before the room expected him. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Corley at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 24 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 25th pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Xavier Worthy in the 85th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Malachi Corley in No. 123 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Malik Mustapha in the 127th pick, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A quiet steal in No. 164: Braelon Allen for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Julius Welschof at slot 239 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Carson Steele at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
