Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the Cowboys. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Jaiden Ausberry at pick 94, roughly 293 spots before his name belonged. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Andrus Peat pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 12th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the back end, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick44
Rnd2
Brandon Inniss
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Brandon Inniss well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick62
Rnd2
Mark Fletcher Jr.
Mark Fletcher Jr. in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jaiden Ausberry
They reached a country mile for Jaiden Ausberry at pick No. 94, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick112
Rnd4
Aaron Graves
They left a pile of value on the table to take Aaron Graves this early at the 112th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick153
Rnd5
Justin Joly
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Justin Joly in pick 153. It fills a real need, too.
Pick177
Rnd5
Will Lee III
They will replay Will Lee III at pick No. 177 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
D'Angelo Ponds
They barely believed it either: D'Angelo Ponds still on the board at slot 224. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick233
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
They let Trey Zuhn III come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Zane Durant
Zane Durant in the 247th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Chris Johnson Jr.
Chris Johnson Jr. at Round 7, Pick 35 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
