Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureD-
The Bears turned the phones into found money: B-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bears did exactly that with Aidan Hubbard in pick 239. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

That Lew pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up.

Adding Myles Garrett by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick57 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
Nice patience on Caleb Banks, who had no business lasting to No. 57. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick60 Rnd2 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 28, where Emmanuel McNeil-Warren graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick70 Rnd3 Zachariah Branch
Value with a capital V on Zachariah Branch in the 70th pick, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick89 Rnd3 Connor Lew
Connor Lew at slot 89 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick99 Rnd3 Demond Claiborne
This one needs a full-page explanation: Demond Claiborne in pick No. 99, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick129 Rnd4 Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun slipping to the 129th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick159 Rnd5 Jude Bowry
Jude Bowry at slot 159 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick204 Rnd6 Luke Altmyer
Luke Altmyer at pick No. 204 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick239 Rnd7 Aidan Hubbard
A big swing on Aidan Hubbard at Round 7, Pick 23, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick241 Rnd7 Dominic Zvada
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dominic Zvada. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
