FutureB-
The Dolphins bet the future on Nussmeier. The board says D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Dolphins did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Put together, it is a D.
They have staked the next five years on Garrett Nussmeier, which is the only story that really matters here. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The cost of the Williams reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Getting Hughes where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Garrett Nussmeier
In slot 8 they get a long-term answer under center. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick15
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
They did well to land Anthony Hill Jr. in the 15th pick, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick47
Rnd2
Max Klare
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Max Klare in pick 47. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick72
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
No edge and no loss on Germie Bernard in Round 3, Pick 8; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick79
Rnd3
Makhi Hughes
Makhi Hughes at the 79th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick84
Rnd3
Elijah Sarratt
Circle this one: Elijah Sarratt at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick108
Rnd4
Amare Campbell
Amare Campbell in No. 108 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick115
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
Parker Brailsford slipping to pick No. 115 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick154
Rnd5
Nic Anderson
Nic Anderson in No. 154 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick193
Rnd6
Hykeem Williams
They liked Hykeem Williams enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 17. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick228
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 228 with a little surplus value in Riley Mahlman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
