Jwilder DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B. There is a lot to like until you notice interior defensive lineman is still a hole. The Patriots never got to the one that mattered most.
They banked enough surplus on Eichenberg to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Zinter pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marvin Harrison Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick35
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
A reach on J.J. McCarthy in No. 35; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick67
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
They went early on Zak Zinter in the 67th overall pick, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick103
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tommy Eichenberg in pick 103. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick181
Rnd6
Cam Hart
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cam Hart in Round 6, Pick 6. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jasheen Davis
A quiet steal in the 224th pick: Jasheen Davis for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
