Phuko DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Allar should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a B-. You could see the war room lean forward. Drew Allar at pick No. 173 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They will need Kearney to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Jake Slaughter
In pick 30 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick61
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane in Round 2, Pick 29 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
A straight-up fair deal on Caleb Tiernan at No. 94, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick129
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
The board had Zachariah Branch higher than pick No. 129, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Jyaire Hill
They paid sticker price for Jyaire Hill in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick138
Rnd4
Sammy Omosigho
Sammy Omosigho in the 138th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick173
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar in the 173rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick179
Rnd5
Evan Stewart
A reach on Evan Stewart in slot 179; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick205
Rnd6
Roderick Kearney
They left a pile of value on the table to take Roderick Kearney this early at Round 6, Pick 22. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
