Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Williams is the Patriots' new face under center. Grade: C-.

Start where it matters. The Patriots took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C-.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Knox pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

The Pearsall value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

So much rides on Caleb Williams that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In the 2nd overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A premium they did not need to pay, Patrick Paul a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick66 Rnd3 Brian Thomas Jr.
A quiet steal in slot 66: Brian Thomas Jr. for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102 Rnd4 Luke Lachey
They took Luke Lachey at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick119 Rnd4 Blake Fisher
A clean, defensible pick in pick 119 with a little surplus value in Blake Fisher. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick139 Rnd5 Nehemiah Pritchett
No edge and no loss on Nehemiah Pritchett in Round 5, Pick 3; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick180 Rnd6 Jack Nelson
Nothing to complain about; Jack Nelson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick216 Rnd6 Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall is a better player than pick No. 216 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick223 Rnd7 Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse at the 223rd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick235 Rnd7 Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick240 Rnd7 Trey Knox
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Knox in slot 240, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
