HURSTISAY DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it. The Spencer Rattler selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 22 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
It is not that Lassiter is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Pearsall where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In slot 3 they get a seam-stretching tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kamari Lassiter
A curious use of No. 35. Interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots needed the pick; a defensive back in Kamari Lassiter did not.
Pick67
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 67 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick103
Rnd4
Spencer Rattler
Value said wait; Spencer Rattler in the 103rd overall pick says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ricky Pearsall
Nice patience on Ricky Pearsall, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jordan Burch
A conviction pick on Jordan Burch at Round 6, Pick 6 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick224
Rnd7
Chau Smith-Wade
A tidy bit of business in No. 224, where Chau Smith-Wade graded well above the range. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
