Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Dolphins drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: B-.

There is reaching, and then there is Dominic Zvada at pick 218. The Dolphins jumped the board by 65 and dared it to prove them wrong. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

They have staked the next five years on Fernando Mendoza, which is the only story that really matters here. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37 Rnd2 Avieon Terrell
Avieon Terrell at Round 2, Pick 5 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick68 Rnd3 Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman is a better player than the 68th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick75 Rnd3 Austin Siereveld
A real head-scratcher, Austin Siereveld in slot 75 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick95 Rnd3 Jaishawn Barham
They talked themselves into Jaishawn Barham at pick No. 95, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick105 Rnd4 Michael Trigg
They reached into another round for Michael Trigg, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144 Rnd5 Chase Roberts
A straight-up fair deal on Chase Roberts at Round 5, Pick 4, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick218 Rnd7 Dominic Zvada
A big swing on Dominic Zvada at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
