Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB- TradesA+ FutureA-
The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Patrick Payton a full 44 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Landing Jackson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Deontae Lawson
In No. 32 they get a green-dot type in the middle, and a steal at that.
Pick92 Rnd3 Parker Brailsford
They paid up for Parker Brailsford at the 92nd pick when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick128 Rnd4 Kage Casey
The board had cheaper options than Kage Casey at Round 4, Pick 26, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick130 Rnd4 Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick134 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in slot 134 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick136 Rnd4 Terry Moore
Steal is underselling it; Terry Moore at pick No. 136 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick137 Rnd4 Patrick Payton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Patrick Payton in the Round 4 slot, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick167 Rnd5 Khalil Barnes
Khalil Barnes in pick No. 167 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick171 Rnd5 J.Michael Sturdivant
They reached a country mile for J.Michael Sturdivant at the 171st overall pick, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick174 Rnd5 Ricardo Hallman
A big swing on Ricardo Hallman at Round 5, Pick 36, well ahead of any board in the building. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick191 Rnd6 Tristan Leigh
Tristan Leigh in pick 191 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick206 Rnd6 Dominic Zvada
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dominic Zvada this early at slot 206. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick241 Rnd7 Thomas Collins
Thomas Collins in the 241st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
