Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureD
A weekend the 49ers spent fighting the board, and losing. F.

The 49ers did not so much draft Patrick Payton as overpay for him, 53 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It bottoms out at a F.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Stewart at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
In slot 28 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick52 Rnd2 Caleb Lomu
A conviction pick on Caleb Lomu at pick 52 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 Iapani Laloulu
They paid sticker price for Iapani Laloulu in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick60 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Caleb Tiernan. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71 Rnd3 DeAndre Moore Jr.
No edge and no loss on DeAndre Moore Jr. in No. 71; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick76 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
They did well to land Nicholas Singleton in the 76th pick, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick80 Rnd3 Kenyon Sadiq
A reach on Kenyon Sadiq in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick92 Rnd3 Sonny Styles
The board had Sonny Styles higher than pick 92, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick118 Rnd4 Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette at the 118th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick128 Rnd4 Rod Moore
Rod Moore at slot 128 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick129 Rnd4 Patrick Payton
A big swing on Patrick Payton at No. 129, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick134 Rnd4 Lee Hunter
They reached a country mile for Lee Hunter at the 134th pick, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick137 Rnd4 Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart in Round 4, Pick 35 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick167 Rnd5 Malik Hartford
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Hartford a notch or two before his time. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick174 Rnd5 Barion Brown
They jumped the gun on Barion Brown, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick206 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
They reached into another round for Riley Mahlman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick241 Rnd7 Thomas Collins
Thomas Collins at pick 241 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
