Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC NeedB TradesA+ FutureC-
Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Trey Moore at No. 174, a reach of 54 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They banked enough surplus on Clark to cover a lot of smaller sins.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick55 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at Round 2, Pick 23 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick56 Rnd2 Iapani Laloulu
Iapani Laloulu at No. 56 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick59 Rnd2 R Mason Thomas
A swing that ignored the value entirely, R Mason Thomas well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick60 Rnd2 Nicholas Singleton
They went early on Nicholas Singleton in pick 60, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick80 Rnd3 Sonny Styles
No drama and no debate, Sonny Styles went about where he belonged in the 80th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick92 Rnd3 Mansoor Delane
Mansoor Delane slipping to slot 92 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick93 Rnd3 Bud Clark
Somehow Bud Clark was still sitting there in No. 93, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick94 Rnd3 Evan Stewart
They left a pile of value on the table to take Evan Stewart this early at the 94th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick95 Rnd3 Kenyon Sadiq
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kenyon Sadiq in pick No. 95. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick126 Rnd4 Daylen Everette
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent the 126th pick on Daylen Everette, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick128 Rnd4 Isaac Smith
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Isaac Smith, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick134 Rnd4 Raylen Wilson
They barely believed it either: Raylen Wilson still on the board at Round 4, Pick 32. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick137 Rnd4 Braylan Shelby
They reached a country mile for Braylan Shelby at pick 137, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick162 Rnd5 Tristan Leigh
Tristan Leigh at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick167 Rnd5 James Smith
James Smith in pick 167 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick174 Rnd5 Trey Moore
A real head-scratcher, Trey Moore in No. 174 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick188 Rnd6 J.Michael Sturdivant
A straight-up fair deal on J.Michael Sturdivant at Round 6, Pick 12, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick206 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
A reach on Riley Mahlman in slot 206; the board had better options right there. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick236 Rnd7 Akheem Mesidor
They talked themselves into Akheem Mesidor at the 236th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick241 Rnd7 Jalen Catalon
Taking Jalen Catalon in pick No. 241 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
