Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but J.Michael Sturdivant at Round 5, Pick 29 is 32 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

The Lee III pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Blake Miller
In the 28th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick60 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
A big swing on Caleb Tiernan at the 60th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick92 Rnd3 Parker Brailsford
They liked Parker Brailsford enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 92. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick128 Rnd4 Will Lee III
Steal is underselling it; Will Lee III at slot 128 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick134 Rnd4 Rod Moore
They read the board right and Rod Moore was the payoff at No. 134. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick137 Rnd4 Austin Romaine
Austin Romaine is a better player than pick No. 137 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick167 Rnd5 J.Michael Sturdivant
J.Michael Sturdivant at No. 167 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174 Rnd5 Fernando Carmona
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Fernando Carmona well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick206 Rnd6 Dominic Zvada
Dominic Zvada in the 206th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick241 Rnd7 Jamari Lyons
Jamari Lyons at pick No. 241 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
