Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureC-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Beck: B.

Call it larceny. Carson Beck sat on the board until slot 128, and the 49ers did not need to be asked twice. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

Casey has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

The 49ers paired the rookies with proven help, Kenyon Green leading the way.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Carnell Tate
In No. 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick62 Rnd2 Nicholas Singleton
A reach on Nicholas Singleton in Round 2, Pick 30; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick64 Rnd2 Iapani Laloulu
Nothing to complain about; Iapani Laloulu went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86 Rnd3 Cashius Howell
Cashius Howell at the 86th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick92 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
A conviction pick on Monroe Freeling at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93 Rnd3 Kage Casey
A wild overpay on Kage Casey in pick 93, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94 Rnd3 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and pick No. 94 is lovely value for the linebacker. The roster fit checks out.
Pick95 Rnd3 Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in slot 95 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick97 Rnd3 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp in No. 97 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick128 Rnd4 Carson Beck
You do not let a quarterback like Carson Beck reach the 128th pick and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick132 Rnd4 Rod Moore
Rod Moore in slot 132 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick134 Rnd4 Earnest Greene III
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Earnest Greene III. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick137 Rnd4 Lee Hunter
A real head-scratcher, Lee Hunter in Round 4, Pick 35 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick161 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in pick No. 161 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick167 Rnd5 Ricardo Hallman
Ricardo Hallman at pick 167 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick174 Rnd5 Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen in the 174th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick206 Rnd6 Dominic Zvada
They paid up for Dominic Zvada at slot 206 when waiting would have done the job. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick241 Rnd7 Jamari Lyons
They liked Jamari Lyons enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 241. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes is a better player than pick No. 245 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
