Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureD+
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Patrick Payton in No. 137.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The 49ers indulged a want in Moore while a need in quarterback stayed open.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Bowen falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Nicholas Singleton
Value said wait; Nicholas Singleton in slot 34 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick52 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Taking Jake Slaughter in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick60 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan in pick 60 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick64 Rnd2 Cashius Howell
Cashius Howell at the 64th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick92 Rnd3 Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at pick No. 92 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick94 Rnd3 Bud Clark
Bud Clark in Round 3, Pick 30 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick97 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Malachi Fields in Round 3, Pick 33. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick102 Rnd3 Oscar Delp
A conviction pick on Oscar Delp at pick 102 that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick103 Rnd4 Drayk Bowen
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Drayk Bowen in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120 Rnd4 Kage Casey
Kage Casey at the 120th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick128 Rnd4 Rod Moore
A want over a need in the 128th pick: Rod Moore adds a safety while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick129 Rnd4 Davison Igbinosun
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Davison Igbinosun adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick132 Rnd4 Nic Anderson
Good price on Nic Anderson in No. 132, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick134 Rnd4 Earnest Greene III
A straight-up fair deal on Earnest Greene III at slot 134, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137 Rnd4 Patrick Payton
They talked themselves into Patrick Payton at the 137th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick141 Rnd5 Le'Veon Moss
They liked Le'Veon Moss enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 141. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick164 Rnd5 Barion Brown
Barion Brown in the 164th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick167 Rnd5 J.Michael Sturdivant
They reached a country mile for J.Michael Sturdivant at slot 167, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick173 Rnd5 Brett Norfleet
Brett Norfleet at pick No. 173 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick174 Rnd5 Jaishawn Barham
They paid up for Jaishawn Barham at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick206 Rnd6 Dominic Zvada
They jumped the gun on Dominic Zvada, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick215 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman at Round 6, Pick 39 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick238 Rnd7 Jamari Lyons
They reached into another round for Jamari Lyons, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick241 Rnd7 Thomas Collins
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Thomas Collins well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
