You can hear the double-takes from here. The 49ers took Patrick Payton at Round 4, Pick 32, roughly 41 spots before his name belonged.

The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back and quarterback. The Clark pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

If Caleb Tiernan and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
