Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Commanders to a D. The tape said wait; the Commanders did not. Dominic Zvada went at Round 7, Pick 7, a good 44 picks before the board was ready.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. It is not that Allen is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. However the rest shakes out, Allen at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
They read the board right and Sonny Styles was the payoff at pick No. 31. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick58
Rnd2
CJ Allen
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 58 on CJ Allen with cornerback and running back unsolved.
Pick60
Rnd2
Lee Hunter
No edge and no loss on Lee Hunter in No. 60; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jake Golday
They did well to land Jake Golday in the 71st overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick125
Rnd4
Aaron Graves
They talked themselves into Aaron Graves at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick131
Rnd4
Albert Regis
They reached into another round for Albert Regis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick145
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at slot 145 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick166
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick171
Rnd5
Chase Roberts
Chase Roberts in No. 171 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick185
Rnd6
Bud Clark
A reach on Bud Clark in pick No. 185; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick196
Rnd6
Josh Cuevas
A wild overpay on Josh Cuevas in pick 196, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
Dominic Zvada at Round 7, Pick 7 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
