Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bears and Coleman: B. You build a draft on nights like this. Jonah Coleman had no business being available in Round 4, Pick 24, and the Bears did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
Hobbs has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In No. 16 they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick48
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
They barely believed it either: Anthony Hill Jr. still on the board at the Round 2 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick80
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Michael Taaffe in the 80th pick leaves edge rusher, cornerback and other spots for later.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman in Round 4, Pick 24 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick155
Rnd5
Daevin Hobbs
Value said wait; Daevin Hobbs in the 155th overall pick says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick194
Rnd6
Tristan Leigh
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tristan Leigh. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick229
Rnd7
A'Marion Peterson
Value with a capital V on A'Marion Peterson in slot 229, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick248
Rnd7
Ethan Onianwa
No edge and no loss on Ethan Onianwa in pick 248; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
