Draft Grade — Bears
Overall

FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Bears, and a B- to prove it. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Bears spent No. 126 on Patrick Payton, a name the board had a full 56 spots lower.
It is not that Clark is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. However the rest shakes out, Downs at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 16th pick they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick48
Rnd2
Makhi Hughes
A straight-up fair deal on Makhi Hughes at pick No. 48, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick80
Rnd3
Bud Clark
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Bud Clark while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots sat open.
Pick126
Rnd4
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at No. 126 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick155
Rnd5
Bryce Foster
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bryce Foster. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick194
Rnd6
James Williams
They left a pile of value on the table to take James Williams this early at the 194th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
