Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C-
ValueB NeedB- TradesF FutureB-
The Steelers robbed the room for Leavitt. Final grade: C-.

The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Sam Leavitt, pick 144, roughly 78 picks past where he belonged. Call it a C- and check back in two years.

The cost of the Williams Sr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The Steelers indulged a want in Green while a need in edge rusher, cornerback and other spots stayed open. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.

Pick Analysis
Pick40 Rnd2 Nyck Harbor
Nyck Harbor at the 40th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick58 Rnd2 John Mateer
They barely believed it either: John Mateer still on the board at Round 2, Pick 26. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71 Rnd3 Austin Barber
Fair-plus on Austin Barber, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick79 Rnd3 Germie Bernard
They let Germie Bernard come to them and pounced at pick No. 79. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick93 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99 Rnd3 Cayden Green
A surprising call. With edge rusher, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent slot 99 on Cayden Green, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick106 Rnd4 Rod Moore
Taking Rod Moore in No. 106 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick126 Rnd4 Justice Haynes
Good price on Justice Haynes in the 126th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Pick130 Rnd4 Tim Keenan III
Tim Keenan III in the 130th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick134 Rnd4 Aaron Anderson
They liked Aaron Anderson enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 134. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick141 Rnd5 Logan Jones
Logan Jones in pick 141 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick144 Rnd5 Sam Leavitt
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Sam Leavitt in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick164 Rnd5 CJ Daniels
They took CJ Daniels at par in the 164th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick172 Rnd5 Earnest Greene III
By-the-book stuff, Earnest Greene III at pick No. 172 squarely in line with his ranking. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick209 Rnd6 Desmond Reid
A conviction pick on Desmond Reid at Round 6, Pick 26 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick217 Rnd6 Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney in slot 217 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick243 Rnd7 James Williams Sr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for James Williams Sr.. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
