Of all the ways to open, the Texans chose the head-scratcher, spending the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots still wide open. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They are betting Wilson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Jurkovec pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get juice off the edge, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They reached into another round for Johnny Wilson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A curious use of pick 88. Interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
They took Kris Abrams-Draine at par in pick No. 121, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Jaden Hicks in the 127th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reach for Ty'Ron Hopper in Round 5, Pick 22; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Nothing to complain about; Blake Watson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Phil Jurkovec at No. 242 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
