Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the 49ers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

On value alone, Johnson makes the weekend a net positive. They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick37 Rnd2 Joshua Josephs
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Josephs. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick54 Rnd2 Nyck Harbor
Nyck Harbor in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jaeden Roberts
They went early on Jaeden Roberts in slot 68, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93 Rnd3 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at Round 3, Pick 29 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick97 Rnd3 Anto Saka
This one needs a full-page explanation: Anto Saka in No. 97, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick122 Rnd4 Parker Brailsford
Parker Brailsford in the 122nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick129 Rnd4 Michael Trigg
They took Michael Trigg at par in pick 129, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick137 Rnd4 J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis at pick No. 137 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139 Rnd4 Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson at Round 4, Pick 39 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick140 Rnd4 Sammy Omosigho
No drama and no debate, Sammy Omosigho went about where he belonged in pick 140. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick171 Rnd5 Isaac Smith
A slide stopped in the 171st overall pick, with Isaac Smith worth more than the price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick194 Rnd6 Darius Taylor
Darius Taylor at slot 194 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick208 Rnd6 James Smith
James Smith in the 208th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick218 Rnd7 Amare Campbell
Amare Campbell in No. 218 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick243 Rnd7 Ricardo Hallman
No edge and no loss on Ricardo Hallman in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
