Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
A passer of the future in Nix, and a B+, for the Patriots.

The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Bo Nix, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging.

They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In slot 18 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value.
Pick29 Rnd1 Bo Nix
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 34 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick46 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Xavier Legette at the 46th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick68 Rnd3 Edgerrin Cooper
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 68 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick77 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 77th overall pick on Payton Wilson with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Pick103 Rnd4 Tykee Smith
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tykee Smith in pick 103. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick117 Rnd4 Max Melton
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Max Melton. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick139 Rnd5 Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick143 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
Dylan Laube in No. 143 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick182 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Nice patience on Frank Gore Jr., who had no business lasting to pick No. 182. It fills a real need, too.
Pick224 Rnd7 Trevor Keegan
A reach on Trevor Keegan in slot 224; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick232 Rnd7 Steele Chambers
By-the-book stuff, Steele Chambers at the 232nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
