Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+.

The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Sam Hartman, 42 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They banked enough surplus on Sainristil to cover a lot of smaller sins. Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Malik Nabers
In pick 5 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35 Rnd2 Terrion Arnold
They did well to land Terrion Arnold in slot 35, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick37 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in the 37th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick54 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A reasonable price with a little left over, Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67 Rnd3 Tyler Guyton
They took Tyler Guyton at par in Round 3, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick103 Rnd4 Cam Hart
A want over a need in the 103rd overall pick: Cam Hart adds a cornerback while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick140 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Travis at slot 140 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick142 Rnd5 J. Michael Sturdivant
Nice patience on J. Michael Sturdivant, who had no business lasting to No. 142. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick181 Rnd6 Mike Sainristil
A cornerback of that caliber at the 181st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick224 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at pick No. 224 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
