Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B-
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Saints. Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Saints to leave a draft.
Lomu falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Bell pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 8th overall pick they get an enforcer at safety. Need was not the driver here.
Pick42
Rnd2
Caleb Lomu
Caleb Lomu is a better player than slot 42 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick73
Rnd3
Skyler Bell
A conviction pick on Skyler Bell at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
