Schoepski DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. The one they had to fix is still broken. The 49ers left wide receiver untouched, and that omission hangs over an otherwise reasonable haul. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Getting Kilgore where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If Rutledge pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In No. 27 they get a blindside protector at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
LT Overton
By-the-book stuff, LT Overton at the 58th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick92
Rnd3
Keylan Rutledge
They jumped the gun on Keylan Rutledge, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
They read the board right and Jalon Kilgore was the payoff at pick No. 127. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jakobe Thomas
A tidy little value on Jakobe Thomas in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick138
Rnd4
Chris McClellan
They did well to land Chris McClellan in pick 138, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick139
Rnd4
Tim Keenan III
Tim Keenan III at slot 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
