Schoepski DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Patriots: B-. The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Eric O'Neill, 54 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The Klein steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Dillon Thieneman
In No. 31 they get a two-high chess piece. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
They went early on Elijah Sarratt in Round 2, Pick 31, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick95
Rnd3
Austin Barber
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Austin Barber. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. at pick 125 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick131
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Parker Brailsford in slot 131. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
Reggie Virgil
Reggie Virgil in the 171st overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick191
Rnd6
Marlin Klein
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marlin Klein at pick 191. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick202
Rnd6
Jadon Canady
Jadon Canady in pick No. 202 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick209
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
A big swing on Eric O'Neill at Round 6, Pick 28, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick212
Rnd6
Bobby Jamison-Travis
Bobby Jamison-Travis at the 212th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick247
Rnd7
Owen Heinecke
Owen Heinecke in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
