The 49ers went off-script early, and it cost them a F.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Nolan Rucci at pick No. 125 is 63 spots clear of where he belonged. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback went begging.

They banked enough surplus on Lew to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
