The Steelers won the night they stopped Bernard from sliding. Grade: C. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Steelers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The final tally is a middling C.
Getting Bernard where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher, cornerback and other spots went begging.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down second-level presence. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon in slot 53 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick60
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Caleb Banks reach pick No. 60 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
Value with a capital V on Zachariah Branch in No. 76, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick85
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
They will replay Germie Bernard at Round 3, Pick 21 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick92
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
The board fumbled Michael Taaffe all the way to the 92nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick132
Rnd4
Dametrious Crownover
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Dametrious Crownover at offensive lineman with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots open.
Pick150
Rnd5
Drew Allar
A reasonable price with a little left over, Drew Allar in slot 150. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Cyrus Allen
They read the board right and Cyrus Allen was the payoff at No. 172. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick214
Rnd6
Dallen Bentley
A tight end of that caliber at the 214th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jeremiah Wright
Jeremiah Wright at Round 6, Pick 35 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jalon Daniels
Good price on Jalon Daniels in pick No. 237, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
