FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. The Iapani Laloulu pick is the one that will follow the 49ers into the fall. They took him 63 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Ponds is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. The Ponds pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick46
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane at slot 46 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick57
Rnd2
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington in pick No. 57 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick80
Rnd3
Keith Abney II
A tidy little value on Keith Abney II in pick 80, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick89
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
Good price on Caleb Tiernan in No. 89, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick96
Rnd3
Iapani Laloulu
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Iapani Laloulu well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick105
Rnd4
Akheem Mesidor
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Akheem Mesidor. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick125
Rnd4
Deion Burks
They read the board right and Deion Burks was the payoff at pick No. 125. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick128
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 128th overall pick on D'Angelo Ponds with running back, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick139
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
A big swing on Jacob Rodriguez at pick 139, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick161
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
No drama and no debate, Max Iheanachor went about where he belonged in No. 161. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick172
Rnd5
Zane Durant
Zane Durant in the 172nd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
