You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They will need Beebe to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
JT Tuimoloau in the 36th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took T.J. Tampa at par in pick 39, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick No. 40, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy little value on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 67, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 37 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dominick Puni at the 102nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Miyan Williams enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 181. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sheridan Jones in the 223rd overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
